Event Description
‘It is essential that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education. (2014 National Curriculum)

This course will support Key Stage 1 teachers in becoming expert teachers of reading by:
• unpicking the progression of skills needed to become a fluent and confident reader
• developing understanding and knowledge of ways to improve reading outcomes
• exploring some of the barriers to reading that will affect some pupils’ progress.

The course will develop participants understanding of how reading is taught in English lessons, guided reading, one-to-one and how it is facilitated and embedded throughout all curriculum subjects.

We will help participants to unpick the key skills that are involved in being able to successfully read and comprehend a range of texts. We will identify effective teaching approaches to foster the required skills.

The course draws upon recent research and findings from the Education Endowment Foundation to help participants stay up to date with proven strategies, including aspects of decoding, fluency, inference, retrieval and self-regulation.

Participants will engage in practical ideas to inspire and excite pupils, exploring ways to develop that ‘love of reading’ (2014 National Curriculum), which can become a platform for successful reading across a range of texts.
