Inter-school moderation of final teacher assessment of Key Stage 2 writing

Hertfordshire’s lead moderator for KS2 writing teacher assessment will once again be leading this opportunity for Year 6 teachers to discuss and moderate their final teacher assessment of writing, shortly before the KS2 data submission date.
Teachers will be supported so that they are able to confidently justify their decisions in line with national exemplification and identify any last minute ‘gaps’ in pupil’s writing that can be closed before the final submission deadline (27th June).
Through comparing their judgements with teachers from other schools and scrutinising the evidence for judgements against each of the ‘pupil can’ statements from the Teacher Assessment Framework (TAF), teachers can verify a sample of their Year 6 writing in order to ensure the consistency of their judgements.
This course will be of use both for schools that are receiving an external statutory moderation, and for schools that are not. For schools not receiving an external moderation, attendance at this inter-school moderation will ensure that staff and schools can feel confident of the accuracy of their writing teacher assessment and that it is in line with national exemplification. For schools that are receiving an external moderation visit, this inter-school moderation meeting will allow opportunities for Year 6 staff to rehearse the professional discussion required at an external moderation, ensuring that they are confident in their knowledge of the evidence required. (If schools are to receive an external moderation visit this year, they will be notified on or after 17th May.)
This is an ideal time for teachers to reflect on their writing evidence, to ensure that, if there are gaps, there is still time to act on this to the benefit of their pupils.
By attending the course, participants will:
scrutinised the evidence for judgements against each of the ‘pupil can’ statements from the TAF, using the national exemplification materials to support their judgements, with teachers from other schools, for a sample of their pupils
gained confidence in making reliable teacher assessments of writing against the 2019 TAF
developed a clear understanding of the writing evidence required for external moderation, and what is meant by independent writing
had an opportunity to share expertise and teaching strategies across schools, and develop greater consistency of judgement
Delegates should bring a ranked class list showing final teacher assessments for writing, and a range of writing from six or more pupils that provides the evidence for each of the ‘pupil can’ statements: ‘working towards’, ‘working at’, and ‘working at greater depth’. To benefit the most from this moderation meeting, please do bring evidence for pupils that are more difficult to assess and/or who have ‘good reason’ to be allowed a ‘particular weakness’. Alternatively, simply bring writing evidence for the whole class so that the sample can be widened, if necessary.
Evidence can come from pupils’ exercise books and other examples of written work for a range of purposes and audiences, and across a range of subjects.
There is an expectation that the process of writing is evident- shown through pupil editing and re-drafting of their work.
Teachers should be able to identify independent writing, and clarify the degree of support a pupil has received.
