Event Description
By popular demand, this course, aimed at all Year 6 teachers and literacy leads, will roll out the latest 2020 DfE/STA national training that all Local Authority moderators receive.

Teachers require the same secure understanding of the Teacher Assessment Frameworks and guidance around writing assessment that the moderators have, in order to ensure that their teacher assessment judgements are accurate and that internal and external moderation is consistent and robust. This course will ensure that teachers hear exactly the same messages as moderators and have seen the same examples of writing at different standards. As part of the course, delegates will also be given the opportunity to put their assessment skills to the test, by taking the same standardisation exercise that moderators are required to pass.

Secure teacher assessment is an essential for every teacher, directly feeding into the teaching and learning and feedback in the classroom.

This course will also be of use to Year 5 teachers, and to Key Stage 3 English teachers and heads of English, to secure successful transition.
Training objectives
Learning outcomes
By attending the course, participants will:

  • receive all the DfE training and key messages, exactly as the moderators are given

  • understand what is meant by ‘particular weakness’ and ‘independence’

  • have time to absorb and use national exemplification materials in order to fully understand the revised ‘pupil can’ statements for each standard

  • learn to assess writing accurately, consistently and robustly

  • gain a set of additional exemplification materials to take away to use as a benchmark against their own pupils’ evidence
