The recent EEF report
highlights the consistently high level of impact when metacognitive and self-regulatory subject-specific approaches have been developed, with pupils making an average of seven months’ additional progress. With this in mind, and borne out of the common issues seen when moderating pupil writing at Key Stages 1 and 2, this new course includes a new classroom resource, ‘Every time we write
’: a pupil resource and teacher tool to help to move every pupil to age-related expectations for their year group. This resource is designed to be used throughout the school in Years 1 to 6, in order to build a pupil’s own editing and review strategies in a systematic and planned way. The principles explored in this session support the development of pupils' metacognition and would apply equally well to distance learning as to the classroom.
This course is suitable for literacy subject leads, allowing them to gain the overview of progression in writing throughout the primary curriculum, and also for class teachers, who will gain invaluable strategies and resources for direct use in the classroom in order to develop quality writing and build pupils’ metacognitive skills.
A limited number of places are available for delegates to receive a post-course coaching visit in school with an assessment adviser. This coaching session can be used flexibly: to troubleshoot, observe pupils working with the ‘every time we write’ resource in the classroom, and engage in professional dialogue in order to review the development in pupils’ writing and metacognitive skills.
