NQTs: Essential formative assessment tools for teaching

Event Description
This remote training, aimed at NQTs and returners, is designed to cover the key components of good practice in day-to-day formative assessment, based on evidenced-informed research and cognitive science. Having effective formative assessment embedded in classroom practice is essential for all pupils to make progress through the curriculum. This is true at all times, but is especially relevant in the wake of the disruption to learning caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

Given that teacher training courses have also been curtailed or unsettled, this course has been revised to ensure that any knowledge gaps can be addressed, and to equip new teachers with the understanding and tools required to meet teacher standards 1, 2, 5 and 6. Strategies for eliciting better evidence from pupils (in order to ascertain prior knowledge, curriculum gaps and misconceptions) will be explored, as will strategies for using this evidence to better inform teaching and feedback. Consideration will be given to how to apply formative assessment strategies to both remote, blended, hybrid and classroom-based teaching and learning.

There are two sessions, the first, on Thursday 22nd September, consists of three webinars, the second session, on Thursday 2nd October, consists of one twilight webinar.

This course is most suitable to NQTs and those teachers early in their career. This course would also suit overseas trained teachers and those returning to teaching.

Training objectives
• Provide support and training for NQTs, who may have experienced gaps in their training year, and early career teachers, so that they are better equipped to use smart assessment to rapidly inform their teaching and planning
Learning outcomes
By attending the course, participants will gain:

• a thorough understanding of the principles and importance of formative assessment
• an understanding of proven strategies that make learning ‘stick’
• strategies to establish a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respect
• strategies for discussion, questioning and talk
• tools to guide pupils to reflect on the progress they have made and their emerging needs
• methods to adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of the pupils
• a range of feedback tools to expedite pupil progress
