Providing development and support for early career teachers (ECTs) during the first year of their induction period, this comprehensive programme has been re-designed to complement the introduction of the Early Career Framework with a focus on strengthening subject knowledge, addressing key aspects of induction and promoting good progress against the Teachers’ Standards.
Sessions enable ECTs to receive high-quality training, share experiences with other ECTs and explore strategies for managing the pressures of their first year.
Day 1: Starting out (Autumn term)
Overview of the statutory induction period for early career teachers: what to expect
Everything ECTs need to know and engage with in order to have a successful induction.
The reading to writing journey: inspiring writers through literature (part one)
This session will focus on effective teaching strategies for use in English lessons, learning how to use high-quality children’s literature to foster confident and capable writers.
Teaching mathematics effectively: knowledge and tools for promoting learning (part one)
This session will explore how to teach mathematics in a way that engages all children in thinking and learning, appropriate to their age phase. As well as unpicking some aspects of subject knowledge, both this and the follow-up session will explore the role of practical resources in deepening understanding. It will also consider how to successfully scaffold mathematics learning.
Day 2: Developing (Spring term)
Supporting emotional health and wellbeing in teachers and their pupils
Teaching mathematics effectively: knowledge and tools for promoting learning (part two)
Formative assessment techniques: crucial for ensuring that teaching is pitched to the needs of the learners
This session will use science and humanities as the context to explore two key areas: formative feedback to move pupils on in their learning and effective classroom questioning techniques to get to the heart of pupils’ understanding.
Day 3: Thriving (Summer term)
Preparing for subject leadership
This session will explore how to take those first steps in preparing to lead a subject. Although this will look different from school to school and from subject to subject, the session will consider the common skills and key actions that work across schools and subjects.
The reading to writing journey: next steps (part two)
This session will support and build on existing and developing reading instruction. Strategies will be shared to engage more effectively with vocabulary in texts, and to foster deep and inferential thinking in pupils.
Building confidence in teaching effective primary science
This session will explore how to teach science in a way that maintains and builds on curiosity and supports the development of the working scientifically skills most appropriate to each age phase. It will explore how to put the 'wow' into lessons through a range of practical activities and discuss different methods to explore and develop scientific understanding and challenge misconceptions.
