Key Stage 2/3 reading fluency project: implications for classroom practice

Event Description
This CPD event will provide a thorough overview of the transformational teaching strategies used within the Herts for Learning Key Stage 2 Reading Fluency Project.

The project draws upon proven reading strategies to improve pupils’ trajectory towards the expected standard (EXS) in reading in Years 5, 6 and 7, including; modelling of fluent reading, echo reading, repeated re-reading, skilled questioning leading to deep discussion, selecting well-chosen texts and modelling of comprehension skills.

Project participant pupils have made an average of two years three months progress in their reading comprehension age following the eight-week intervention. Furthermore, pupils typically demonstrated the following changes in reading behaviour: increased stamina, improved reading accuracy, increased enjoyment of reading, heightened confidence and improved engagement with a range of reading material.

This training is delivered as three sessions:

Session 1: understanding the intervention
This is a pre-recorded session. A link allowing access to this session will be sent to delegates on the 4th November, one week before the delivery date for sessions 2 and 3. It is strongly advised that delegates access session 1 before attending sessions 2 and 3. Please note that session 1 will not be available to delegates after the delivery date for sessions 2 and 3.

Session 2: delivering Session A
This live webinar will run from 11:00am-12:30pm.

Session 3: delivering Session B and next steps
This live webinar will run from 13:30-15:00pm.

Please note that these sessions will be recorded and will be available for delegates to access for one week after delivery.
Training objectives

  • to develop clarity around the core project strategies

  • to gain confidence in delivering the key pedagogical approaches

  • to consider the reading profile of under attaining pupils

  • to clarify the key barriers to improving outcomes in reading for under attaining pupils, and learn how these can be addressed through the project strategies

Learning outcomes
By attending the event, participants will:

  • have a deeper understanding of the effective strategies used in the KS2 Reading Fluency Project

  • feel confident to be able to implement these strategies back in the classroom

  • be equipped with resources to implement aspects of the project
