Event Description
This is the first in a series of evolving short webinars to support school staff in progressing towards being an anti-racist school. Sessions will build staff confidence by bringing teachers and leaders up to speed on various dimensions important within an anti-racist school.

This session focuses on the importance language. Effective anti-racist development requires leaders to be confident in their use of terminology. We will identify principles to help us refer appropriately to different ethnicities and identities and will explore the learning from some of the word-journeys through time. We will also succinctly explore some key events and histories that lie behind Britain’s current race equality and anti-racism lexicon, in order to better equip participants to lead their school in this crucial aspect of equality.

Delivery will be by advisers with extensive experience of supporting schools on developing anti-racist practice. The strategies and approaches will support schools in meeting the requirements of the Race Equality Act 2010.
Training objectives

  • to provide clarity on the current lexicon for anti-racism and race equality

  • to boost confidence in using terminology with staff and with BAME parents/carers and pupils

  • to identify key concepts that will help develop an anti-racist school culture
