Event Description
This course will support Year 5 and 6 teachers in developing their teaching approaches, curriculum design, and text selection in order to best prepare their pupils for making progress towards working at greater depth in reading, and reaching the higher standard in end of Key Stage 2 assessments.

This live webinar is a follow-up session to the pre-recorded ‘on-demand’ training session. This will be sent to registered delegates from 20th January
and should be watched prior to attendance at the live webinar. Please allow at least 1 hour 30 mins to watch the pre-recorded session.

Drawing upon research in and out of the classroom, the course will cover the essential knowledge and skills that underpin successful comprehension of texts both during and after the act of reading. Practical activities and demonstrations will illustrate how to use whole class, group, and individual approaches during reading sessions. Delegates will explore ways to develop pupils thinking at a deeper and more sustained level, as well as consider how to develop the clarity and precision of how children express and develop their thoughts.

During the session, explicit reference will be made to statutory assessment domains. Delegates will be supported to see how the principles and approaches of effective reading instruction will support progress and attainment under each of the relevant assessment domains. Analysis of past papers will be used to highlight implications for test preparation and technique, without losing sight of the long-term, core aim of developing confident, thoughtful and articulate readers, able to cope with the demands of increasingly complex texts.
Training objectives

  • take away a range of approaches to developing higher level reading knowledge and skills, and enhance the quality of expression in responding to texts

  • develop pedagogy through participation in demonstrations of reading instruction designed to support achievement at the higher standard, and boost all pupils ability to think about, and discuss what they have read

  • gain insight into what might characterise performance at the higher standard in reading

  • understand how best to prepare pupils for the demands of the KS2 reading paper within a principled, evidence-informed approach to developing motivated, curious, and thoughtful readers

Learning outcomes

  • an increased number of pupils working at the greater depth standard in reading
