Event Description
Steve Oakes is the author of The A Level Mindset (2016) and The A Level Mindset Student Handbook (2016). He will be attending to discuss his research which shows how successful students approach their studies with a specific set of behaviours, skills and attitudes, and that despite not differing cognitively from their peers, they can significantly outperform them.

Steve will share his experience as the Assistant Director of Sixth Form at The Blue Coat School in Oldham, where for each of the last five years, progress measures placed AS and A level students in the top 10% nationally. The Sixth Form has received an outstanding judgement in consecutive Ofsted inspections and featured in a 2013 government Parliamentary Review.

This one-hour session introduces the notion of non-cognitive skills, looks at student behaviours associated with over and under performance, and then takes each element of the VESPA model at a time. Steve will explore two activities per element of the model, ten in total, giving the chance for delegates to respond to the materials and try them out.
