Event Description
Steve Oakes is the author of The A Level Mindset (2016) and The A Level Mindset Student Handbook (2016). He will be attending to discuss his research which shows how successful students approach their studies with a specific set of behaviours, skills and attitudes, and that despite not differing cognitively from their peers, they can significantly outperform them.

Steve will share his experience as the Assistant Director of Sixth Form at The Blue Coat School in Oldham, where for each of the last five years, progress measures placed AS and A level students in the top 10% nationally. The Sixth Form has received an outstanding judgement in consecutive Ofsted inspections and featured in a 2013 government Parliamentary Review.

This one-hour session is designed specifically to boost engagement and motivation for discouraged Year 12 or 13 students. The session will focus on specific strategies that can support students who are feeling at sea. Covering goal-setting and habit-formation, workspaces and concentration, time management and effective revision, this session is ideal for any staff member who wants to try and re-energise their Year 12 and Year 13 students.
Training objectives

  • to explore key principles of non-cognitive skill development and share practical tools for development of these constructs

  • to explore the model to develop strategies to support and engage Year 12 and Year 13 students

Learning outcomes

  • understand how the VESPA model can support Year 12 students in adjusting to the demands of post-16 study and achieve success

  • explore how the model can be used to develop the key competencies which will help them be successful in their A level and Level 3 vocational studies and the challenges in Year 13

  • consider how the model might operate the delegate's organisation

  • opportunity to ask questions
