Event Description
The KS2/3 Reading Fluency Project is designed to swiftly improve reading fluency and comprehension of those pupils who have entered Year 5, Year 6 or Year 7 working below the expected standard in reading. The project strategies have been trialled extensively, and have had a powerful effect on reading ability for the vast majority of pupils, in turn supporting them to develop more positive views about reading.
Over the eight-week period, target pupils receive two 20 minutes teacher-led sessions each week. Using the key strategies of modelled expert reading and echo reading, alongside challenging text selection, pupils have been shown to make dramatic progress across an eight-week intervention period. Pupils made on average 31.5 months progress during the intervention period and have a more positive relationship with books; are more enthusiastic, confident readers with an increased understanding and engagement with texts.

In addition, schools will be supplied with assessment materials, which will support in judging the impact of the project. The HfL advisory team will mark and analyse the assessment materials, providing the pre-intervention data outcomes at the school visit and the post-intervention data outcomes at the final review.
The project cost covers the inclusion of one teacher (who will deliver the sessions) and a project lead (this may be the English subject Leader).

- a project launch, incorporating three sessions (session 1 is pre-recorded and can be accessed on 7th September, one week prior to the launch day; sessions 2 and 3 will be delivered as live webinars across one day)
- a twilight session (delivered as a 2 hour live webinar)
- a two-hour in-school visit (delivered remotely where necessary)
- a final review (delivered as a 2 hour live webinar)

Training objectives
- to develop clarity around the core project strategies
- to gain confidence in delivering the key pedagogical project approaches
- to consider the reading profile of under-attaining pupils
- to clarify the key barriers to improving outcomes in reading for under-attaining pupils, and learn how these can be addressed through the project strategies
Learning outcomes
- teachers and leads will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement the project successfully to support those pupils who are working below year group standards in their reading
- teachers and leads will be able to share this learning with colleagues to ensure that improved progress is secured for more pupils beyond the initial project pupil group
