Event Description
The school business management profession is a key element of creating a sustainable future for our schools. However, as budgets continue to be squeezed and workloads grow, pressure on SBMs intensifies. This year’s conference is focussing on inspiring SBMs in their role and their influence on shaping the future of their school.

The conference is the perfect way to step away from the day-to-day pressures, stay up to date on all the latest educational and professional developments and network with other SBMs.

Keynote delivered by Marcus Child

Workshops will include:

ICFP: Why, what and how? Forward financial planning and resource management
Led by DfE-accredited school resource management advisers
As Lord Agnew shared in a recent speech to school business leaders, we have a key role in ensuring all children have a first class education, and knowing the cost of each lesson is just one element of managing our resources. Learn the key metrics employed within the government initiative of school resource efficiency, how and when to apply these in your school, and to help you secure your school’s future resilience in the current education economic climate. The workshop will go beyond the metric tool and explore the resource efficiency approach and strategies to enable you to protect the assets in your school and its future sustainability.

Employment law learning session
Led by Tom Stenner-Evans, a Partner in the Employment Team at Michelmores LLP supported by the Herts for Learning HR team
With effective school resource management a high priority, the unfortunate reality is that restructuring and redundancy scenarios are becoming more commonplace in the education sector. Within the session you will be guided through an interactive look at carrying out a restructuring exercise. The session will include particular emphasis on best practice for both legal compliance and employee engagement during this often difficult time. You will leave this engaging session armed with a wealth of information to guide your school through even the most complex and contentious restructuring programmes.

Staff and team wellbeing for recruitment and retention
Led by Herts for Learning HR expert practitioners and wellbeing partners
As resilience and wellbeing continue to be highlighted by staff within national surveys and by government as a key priority and concern within education, join an expert-led session to identify key resources and approaches to implement in your school environment to allow you to reinvest and inspire your team.

School business professional practice
Herts for Learning team and school business management practitioners
The need for strong leadership and accountability continue to be key themes in education. This session will focus on strategies and case studies of how school business leaders have promoted professional collaboration with the senior leadership team and governors and its positive impact on the school operation.
The workshop will build your professional practise and your contribution to school improvement by sharing key tips and approaches on how to build your influence and rapport with key stakeholders. You will leave the session confident in ensuring that your view will be heard and your ability to shape the future of your school is enhanced
