Event Description
This full-day course, with optional half day follow up session, is delivered jointly by the English and Assessment teams, and will focus on what ‘working at great depth’ in Year 6 could look like for writing in the Year 6 classroom.

Using the Teacher Assessment Framework in conjunction with writing exemplars, delegates will explore the requirements for greater depth and provide detailed guidance on the sorts of evidence that would support a judgement at this standard. A range of teaching approaches, writing opportunities and suitable texts to support pupils in achieving the greater depth measure will be shared. Developing pupils as confident, mature writers - both in technical and authorial terms - will underpin the course content.

New for 2019-2020: A limited number of places are available for delegates to return for a half-day follow up session on 20th January. This session will provide an opportunity for delegates to review the progress made in their focus pupils’ writing and to evaluate their performance in relation to the GDS standard.

Places are strictly limited in order to facilitate tightly focused professional dialogue and guidance. A total of 20 places are avaialble. Please book separately using course code 20ASS/001P. Places available on a first come, first served basis at a cost of £78 per delegate.
Training objectives
Learning outcomes

  • gain confidence assessing writing at ‘greater depth’- knowing what it is, and what it isn’t

  • discuss examples of work from pupils who might be considered working at greater depth in Year 6 in writing, exploring what makes good writing evidence

  • consider how to use the remaining time available to both secure the learning required and help pupils to demonstrate it in their work

  • explore writing opportunities and texts that are well-placed to provide good evidence to demonstrate pupils’ learning
