Event Description
This course will support English coordinators and other school leaders with clear approaches to enhancing the teaching of reading in their schools.

Leading on reading is a complex role as pupil’s reading skills impact on all areas of the curriculum. Understanding the required standards and good practice is crucial and this course will support leaders to have the knowledge and understanding to undertake a deep dive into reading throughout their school.

Delegates will explore the various ways in which reading is taught and how this can be timetabled. The three main areas of teaching: decoding, fluency and comprehension will be discussed in depth, helping leaders consider good practice and age-related expectations.

We will also:

  • unpick provision, considering the roles of book banding, class books and school libraries

  • address monitoring and evaluating, ensuring that leaders understand what good practice looks like and how to support those who do not have all the skills/understanding required

  • consider whole-school implications arising from discussions of reading in the new Ofsted Framework

Training objectives

  • to reflect upon the systematic nature and outcomes of leading on reading

  • to provide an in-depth overview of the teaching of reading including a clear understanding of the progression of phonics, fluency and comprehension from Y1-6

  • to understand end of key stage expectations and those of the year groups in between

Learning outcomes
By attending the course, participants will have:
• deepened their understanding of how the teaching of reading progresses through the primary age range
• understood how to monitor for ARE and provide any necessary support
• considered strategies for supporting pupils who are working above and below age-related expectations
• explored possibilities and effectiveness of dedicated sessions outside of English lessons e.g. ‘guided reading’ and ‘1:1’ reading
• discussed ways of involving parents in the development of their pupil’s reading
