The Year 7 Reading Fluency Project is designed to swiftly improve reading fluency and comprehension of those pupils who have entered KS3 working below the expected standard in reading. The project strategies have been trialled extensively with Year 5 & 6 pupils, and have had a powerful effect on reading ability for the vast majority of pupils, in turn supporting them to develop more positive views about reading.
Over the 8-week period, target children receive 2 x 20 minutes teacher-led sessions each week. Using the key strategies of modelled expert reading and echo reading, alongside challenging text selection, pupils have been shown to make dramatic progress across an 8-week intervention period. Year 6 pupils made on average 31.5 months progress during the intervention period.
The Year 7 project was trialled in 3 secondary schools in summer 2019 and has been adapted to suit a secondary audience. The 17 pupils who took part in the secondary trial improved their reading comprehension age by 15 months.

The project incorporates a range of high quality CPD elements, including:
NB. Live sessions are recorded and will be available to access for one week after delivery.
In addition, schools will be supplied with assessment materials, which will support in judging the impact of the project. The HfL advisory team will mark and analyse the assessment materials, providing the pre-intervention data outcomes at the school visit and the post-intervention data outcomes at the final review.
The project cost covers the inclusion of one teacher (who will deliver the sessions) and a project lead (this may be the Head of English).

- a project launch, incorporating 3 sessions (session 1 is pre-recorded and can be accessed on 15th September, two weeks prior to the launch day: session 2 13:00-14:30 & session 3 15:00-16:30 will be delivered across one afternoon)

- a 2-hour in-school visit (this can be delivered remotely if necessary)
- a final review (delivered as a one-hour live webinar)

Training objectives
- to develop clarity around the core project strategies
- to gain confidence in delivering the key pedagogical project approaches
- to consider the reading profile of under attaining pupils
- to clarify the key barriers to improving outcomes in reading for under attaining pupils, and learn how these can be addressed through the project strategies
Learning outcomes
- teachers and leads will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement the project successfully to support those pupils who are working below year group standards in their reading
- teachers and leads will be able to share this learning with colleagues to ensure that improved progress is secured for more pupils beyond the initial project pupil group
