Event Description
As part of the Hertfordshire County Council commissioned transition project, the Herts for Learning Early Years team are providing workshop sessions in the Spring 2021 term to share the updates to the transition level of need criteria and tool. The overall focus of the project is to ensure a smooth transition for all children due to start school in September 2021.

The aim of the workshop is for all early years practitioners working in school Nursery and Reception classes, nursery schools, pre-schools, day nurseries (PVI) and childminders*, to receive information on the updated transition level of need criteria and guidance on using the transition level of need tool.

(* for childminders with children due to start school, and who do not attend another early years group setting, please arrange to complete the transition level of need tool)

NB for those who attended the briefing last year, it is recommended you attend to be informed of the updates to the criteria and transition level of need tool.

It will be important that practitioners gain an understanding of how this can support early identification of those children with potential barriers to learning and help enable them to experience a smooth transition to school.

Learning outcomes
The aims of the session are to:

• introduce the updated level of need criterion to identify potential barriers on entry to school for individual children
• demonstrate how to complete the transition level of need tool for children moving on to school and share the information with the feeder school 
• collate information to provide an overview of the whole cohort for the school
• share ideas for use of the collated information to start planning to meet the needs of individual children identified as requiring intensive, personalised or targeted support
