Code: MAT/19/141/S Why do they always forget? Securing Grades 4 and 5 in Year 11

“Why do they always forget?” – a cry of frustration familiar to many who have taught Foundation Tier GCSE. There are many students who clearly have the potential to gain a Grade 4 or 5, but who seem to have a problem retaining mathematical facts and processes.
Why is this? This is the question this course seeks to answer. We will explore how we can help these perfectly intelligent and capable young people turn things around and gain the grades they need to give their life-chances a kick-start.
The day is divided into two equal halves, to enable the course to be shared between different delegates if this is more convenient for schools

Code: ENG/20/12/P Key Stage 1 Reading Fluency Project

HfL have now taken over 1000 pupils at KS2 through the highly successful Reading Fluency Project. Pupils who participated in the project made, on average, over 2 years’ progress in reading comprehension age through the 8 week intervention (based on analysis of YARC assessment data). This innovative project is now being adapted for key stage 1 pupils. Our initial trials demonstrate the same level of success.

This project has been designed to address the issues that we find many of our KS1 pupils are faced with: insufficient sight vocabulary and an over-reliance on sounding out; insufficient stamina to get through the SAT paper at year 2; lack of comprehension skills when reading aloud. This project offers strategies that will have a swift and powerful impact on pupils’ reading achievement in a short space of time. Following successful implementation of the project, pupils in Year 1 and 2 will be on an improved trajectory towards EXS at the end of KS1; have a more positive relationship with books; be more enthusiastic, confident readers with an increased understanding and engagement with texts.

The project will focus predominantly on the need to improve pupil’s reading fluency of sufficiently complex texts. The past few years have seen increased reference to the need to develop fluency in reading. The DFE exemplification materials and test papers highlighted heightened expectations around swift comprehensive reading. A lack of fluency impacts upon understanding, motivation, confidence and rates of progress. Research has shown that specific instruction around fluency enables pupils to free up cognitive space
which can be directed more effectively towards other activities “… such as comprehension, analysis, elaboration and deep understanding.” [Hattie 2014]

The cost of this project is £780 (plus VAT). The full project outline is given below. Please note that it may be possible to include an additional delegate – this may be suitable for two-form entry schools - subject to a nominal £100 fee to cover costs for the sessions, resources and additional TLA time needed for data analysis. Should you like to include an additional class teacher, please detail this information on your participation agreement form.
