This course is aimed at all governors and headteachers of Voluntary Aided, Foundation schools and academies. This session is suitable for both Primary and Secondary schools/academies and is aimed at governors of own admission authority schools.
If parents appeal against a decision not to admit their child, a governor will have to defend that decision to an independent appeals panel and try to convince them that admitting another child would 'prejudice the provision of efficient education or the efficient use of resources.' If the panel is not convinced, they will uphold the parental appeal.
This training is aimed at English subject leaders who are either new to the role or looking to enhance their contribution to improving English across the school.
Throughout the course, delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations of core subject leadership.
Delegates will develop their capacity to evaluate teaching and learning across a range of evidence to drive improvement throughout the school.
The key elements of English subject leadership will be explored through a spotlight on each of the different aims of the English curriculum: effective spoken language, fluent reading for meaning, writing for a range of purposes and vocabulary development.
This will enable subject leaders to deepen subject-specific knowledge and understanding. Delegates are expected to attend all five sessions of this training.

This course, aimed at NQTs and returning teachers, is designed to cover the key components of good practice in day-to-day formative assessment, based on up-to-date thinking and research.
Establishing the right classroom ethos for Assessment for Learning (AfL) to have maximum impact on pupils' progress is key, and this course will explore practical classroom strategies to embed a new culture of learning in every classroom that breeds resilience and confidence in learners while also raising aspirations and fostering wellbeing.
Topics covered in the course include developing the growth mindset, setting good learning objectives, generating success criteria with pupils and using these effectively, feeding back to pupils about their learning, language for learning, enabling pupils to carry out peer and self-assessment, and good quality questioning to move learning forward.
This course is most suitable to NQTs and those teachers early in their career. This course would also suit overseas trained teachers and those returning to teaching.

Exploring what it means to be a scientist, will not only engage and excite pupils but also develop essential working scientifically skills. This course is for teachers and subject leaders who are looking to inspire future scientists and develop life-long learning skills.Essential Information
Is developing teaching to ‘pitch work at the correct level for the most able’ or ‘set work which consistently challenges and stretches the most able’ or ‘improve teaching of the most able so they achieve higher standards’ a school focus?
Understanding exactly what this means and looks like in the classroom is hard. Pupils who are quick at calculating and getting the right answer might seem secure and ready for the challenge. But do they have depth of understanding? Can they explain their thinking or apply it independently to a different context? Why is it that even when providing opportunities for deeper thinking pupils do not reach the higher standard by the end of the key stage?
This course, suitable for subject leaders, Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers, will explore how to move pupils through the programme of study ‘at broadly the same pace’ whilst providing opportunities to challenge all pupils. Using simple, yet elegant, approaches ways to add depth and challenge to tasks suitable for all by adding reasoning, varying representations, asking ‘what if?’ and developing independence will be developed. Exploring how to convert greater depth into more pupils reaching the higher standard will also be focused upon by considering what else needs to happen.
This course is strongly recommended for all governors and is essential for the designated child protection governor(s), the chair and the vice chair. It is also highly recommended that all governors refresh this training every 4 years. This termly user group is designed to provide up-to-date information on developments within the Capita SIMS software and statutory returns, as well as exchanging information on processes and procedures undertaken on a day-to-day basis. It also offers the opportunity to ask Data Management consultants any questions, and network with other school administrators. This session is free to schools that have a support contract with Data Management Services. HfL recommends attendance at these user groups to keep up to date and informed.Essential Information
