Code: ASS/19/507/P Assessment moderation cluster for teachers of Year 2: Cluster 3 – Bishop's Stortford and Buntingford

This year, the focus of this moderation session will be reading and writing. The session will provide an excellent opportunity for Year 2 teachers to work together to explore the accuracy of their assessment judgements and achieve greater consistency in standards. Teachers will be supported in considering how secure their pupils are in their learning so far, and how well on track they are for the end of Key Stage 1 standards.

It is essential that delegates bring along examples of pupils' work from their class. We will provide a suggested reading assessment task for teachers to use with the pupils in advance of the sessions. In January, information will be sent to delegates and also uploaded to the grid at: http://www.thegrid.org.uk/learning/assessment/ks1/moderationclusters.shtml

Code: MAT/19/315/P Enabling teaching assistants to support and develop pupils’ resilience and reasoning in mathematics - afternoon session

Many pupils lack resilience in mathematics. Teaching assistants can make a real difference to improve this.

This brand-new, two-hour practical session will support TAs to develop pupils’ resilience in mathematics.

Delegates will leave with a range of practical strategies that they can use to:
• support problem-solving
• teach pupils to sustain their focus when asked to think for themselves
• improve pupil’s confidence and understanding of fractions.

The local cluster training is repeated in morning and afternoon sessions so as many TAs as possible can benefit.

Code: ENG/20/70/P Fixing full stops in Years 3 and 4

The writing programme of study for Lower Key Stage 2 (LKS2) demands that pupils move on swiftly from basic understanding of simple sentence constructions to mastery of sophisticated structures involving a range of punctuation and verb forms.

This can only be achieved if pupils enter the key stage with a strong understanding of what constitutes a sentence. Many pupils enter KS2 with weak subject knowledge in this area, demonstrated by their inaccurate use of full stops, and the huge leap in grammatical knowledge demanded of them in LKS2 can exacerbate this problem.

It is important therefore, that any weakness in sentence structure is identified and addressed early on so that teachers can embark upon supporting their pupils to move to the next step of learning.

This course will support delegates to address this issue through the combination of a subject knowledge development session, and a tailored in-school consultancy visit.

At the half-day session, delegates will have an opportunity to explore the sentence demarcation issues that their pupils present, as well as consider a range of tried and tested techniques to improve sentence demarcation techniques for addressing the issue of poor sentence knowledge.

During the half-day in-school consultancy visit (to be arranged at a time to suit the school), the class teacher and subject leader (if available) will have an opportunity to consider how the techniques have worked for their pupils and how they can be adapted to further develop pupil’s skills in this area.
