Code: 19ASS/023P Assessment moderation cluster for teachers of Year 2: cluster 12 - Hertford and Ware

These summer term cluster meetings will give Year 2 teachers an opportunity to discuss their evidence for Key Stage 1 teacher assessment with other teachers and with assessment advisers. This will be particularly useful in identifying any gaps in pupils’ work that need to be addressed before the final assessments are made. In each subject area (reading, writing and maths) we recommend that teachers bring evidence for a pupil who they expect to achieve the expected standard at the end of KS1, but who has not yet quite secured the standard, and for a pupil who they expect to be working at greater depth within the expected standard, but who has not quite secured it. Teachers may also wish to bring evidence for a pupil who is expected to be working towards the standard or a pupil for whom it is difficult to make the judgement. It is advised that teachers take the opportunity to focus on pupils who are on the cusp of achieving a standard, or pupils that are more difficult to assess, for example because they have an unusual profile of strengths and weaknesses in their learning, as these scenarios tend to lead to the most fruitful conversations. The discussions will focus on the 2019 Teacher Assessment Framework (TAF), as this is the statutory document for end of KS1 assessment.

Code: H08/05/19 Exclusions

This training session equips governors to be able to sit on a governors' Disciplinary Committee panel which is a statutory requirement in the case of certain types of school exclusion, including any permanent exclusion. We recommend that panel members are re-trained every 2 years.

Outcomes

Governors will:

  • gain an understanding of and insight into the exclusion process (including the statutory procedures that a governing board must follow when reviewing a headteacher's decision to exclude a child) and the processes followed by the Independent Review Panel
  • receive an update on exclusion legislation and guidance
  • understand the different responsibilities of the headteacher, governing board and Local Authority in the exclusion process.

Outline

Excluding a pupil involves a statutory process that governors should ensure they perform legally and effectively. There will be a mixture of tutor input, group activity/discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

Malcolm Leigh, Governance

Code: 19EAY/031P EYFS 1:1 moderation preparation briefing

This is an optional twilight session for reception teachers/practitioners who have not taken part in 1:1 moderation before or attended NQT training, and would like to find out more. If teachers/practitioners have had a previous 1:1 moderation, there is no need to attend. This briefing provides additional information for those practitioners receiving a 1:1 moderation in 2019. It provides details of how practitioners can prepare for the moderation visit, what to prepare and the format for the day. This will enable practitioners to feel confident about their upcoming visit.

Code: 19ENG/010P Fixing full stops in Years 3 and 4

The writing programme of study for Lower Key Stage 2 (LKS2) demands that pupils move on swiftly from basic understanding of simple sentence constructions to mastery of sophisticated structures involving a range of punctuation and verb forms. This can only be achieved if pupils enter the key stage with a strong understanding of what constitutes a sentence. Many pupils enter KS2 with weak subject knowledge in this area, demonstrated by their inaccurate use of full stops, and the huge leap in grammatical knowledge demanded of them in LKS2 can exacerbate this problem. It is important therefore, that any weakness in sentence structure is identified and addressed early on so that teachers can embark upon supporting their pupils to move to the next step of learning. This course will support delegates to address this issue through the combination of a subject knowledge development session, and a tailored in-school consultancy visit. At the half-day session, delegates will have an opportunity to explore the sentence demarcation issues that their pupils present, as well as consider a range of tried and tested techniques to improve sentence demarcation techniques for addressing the issue of poor sentence knowledge. During the half-day in-school consultancy visit (to be arranged at a time to suit the school), the class teacher and subject leader (if available) will have an opportunity to consider how the techniques have worked for their pupils and how they can be adapted to further develop pupil’s skills in this area.
