This course is for teachers who are new to, or returning to, teaching in Year 2.

Delegates will explore the statutory requirements for assessing pupils' attainment in the core subjects at Key Stage 1 this year and consider strategies for supporting pupils in their learning journey towards achieving the expected standards.

Delegates will also consider how the Herts for Learning assessment resources can help to track pupils’ progress and support planning and teaching throughout the year. (These materials are non-statutory and some schools may have adopted a different approach to assessment. The course will still be relevant even if that is the case.)

This established course (formerly securing age-related expectations in Year 6) has supported teachers with understanding the aims and content of the Upper Key Stage 2 National Curriculum.

It will enable practitioners to recognise what age-related outcomes should look like and secure effective pathways to these end goals.

We will unpick the end of year requirements and support teachers with ways to modify teaching approaches in order to accelerate learning so that pupils achieve their potential. We will share strategies, practical ideas and resources for improving outcomes in reading, writing and spelling.

Accurate and effective reporting of staff data enables senior leaders, governors and bursars to gain access to data efficiently, in readiness for analysis and statutory returns.

On this half-day course, delegates will learn how to run, create and modify reports within the Personnel area directly on their own school’s SIMS data, enabling delegates to access these created reports when back in school. This will enable delegates to run and create reports for the senior leadership and finance team, allowing for effective analysis of their personnel data.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is one of the most important aspects of schools' work. One element of this is to carry out and record robust recruitment checks. Ofsted inspectors scrutinise the school's Single Central Record (SCR) during inspections. They are likely to be interested both in whether it is compliant with the requirements outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education, and in the school's culture and approach to maintaining it.

Changing requirements over time often lead to questions about how best to maintain the SCR, and about compliance and best practice.

This half-day course will remind delegates of the importance of meeting the statutory requirements. It will allow delegates to explore what constitutes an effective SCR.

The session is for anyone with responsibility for establishing, updating or maintaining the school's SCR. The training will comprise presentation, discussion and practical activity.

Common themes and areas for development from recent Ofsted inspections will be shared and considered in the context of delegates own schools.

Herts for Learning and Bob Cox, founder of the Opening Doors movement, are delighted to be working in collaboration to present this unique training offer.

Throughout the afternoon session, Bob will guide teachers through the Opening Doors principles, supporting them to see how all learners can be supported to reach for the highest standards.

Examples of pupil’s outcomes, alongside detailed case studies, will exemplify how quality text comprehension can link with quality writing in a rich and exciting curriculum design.

In addition, Bob will share his insights into effective objective sequencing and informed skills progression. Through presenting an assortment of high-quality texts, ranging from picture books to children’s literature and literary texts, Bob will promote a curriculum that offers risk-taking, questioning and choice.

Following on from the training session, delegates will have access to a half-day consultancy visit, to be delivered by an HfL adviser, allowing them to explore how the principles addressed in Bob’s session can be enacted effectively within their classroom.

All delegates attending this training will receive copies of Bob’s two new books: ‘Opening Doors to a Richer English Curriculum’, which include 30 new teaching units. (The cost of the books is included within the training cost. Delegates will receive the texts with a 50% reduction off the recommended retail price).

This course offers an introduction to learning mentoring and would benefit anyone new to the role or considering becoming a learning mentor. A mentor plays a key role in helping a child to achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally. The tools and reports available in FFT Aspire continue to evolve to give schools a powerful insight into pupil attainment and progress.

This course will help delegates to use it to its full potential by exploring how to use its full range of features, including analysis of attainment and progress at Key Stage 2 (using the latest 2019 data), the Governor Dashboard and Extended Dashboard, term of birth analysis, pupil estimates to inform target-setting and the powerful Student Explorer.

Delegates should use their FFT Aspire username and password that gives access to pupil level data. We strongly advise that delegates check that these log-in details are working well in advance of the course.
