What are effective processes for curriculum construction, debate and renewal?
In reality, how is the curriculum used as a progression model?
Which factors influence the inclusion or omission of content within different curriculum models?
Which factors influence the order of content across different curriculum disciplines within the curriculum?

Following the success of the Primary Curriculum Symposium, Herts for Learning are delighted to launch a follow-up CPD offer: Curriculum in Motion. This series of half-day CPD sessions will allow leaders to continue the conversations begun during the Curriculum Symposium and to re-focus on key curriculum questions, such as those listed above. For those leaders who did not attend the Curriculum Symposium, the sessions will provide an excellent opportunity to engage in the topical debates surrounding curriculum design and implementation.

The five Curriculum in Motion sessions, which will be spread across the academic year 2019/20, will feature guest speakers, all of whom have considerable experience of forming and shaping bespoke curriculums, designed to meet the needs of learners within their diverse settings. Acting on the feedback from the Curriculum Symposium, each session will feature a speaker who is able to give practical insights into the processes, challenges and considerations associated with visioning and implementing a primary curriculum. In addition, the sessions will incorporate time and space to allow for leaders to consider, debate and respond to the content being presented.

Generic session outline:
Input 1: guest speaker – selected from a school or organisation that has engaged deeply in curriculum considerations.
Reflection time: an opportunity for leaders to discuss the content of the input session; time for questions or working with colleagues to consider actions to take back to settings.
Input 2: Hertfordshire schools’ showcase – input from a Hertfordshire Headteacher, or leader, working in a school that has been noted for its investment in curriculum considerations.

The following guest speakers have been confirmed: Ed Vainker, co-founder and executive principal of Reach Academy Feltham; Christine Counsell, who sits on Ofsted's curriculum advisory panel and was formerly director of education at Inspiration Trust; Andrew Percival, deputy headteacher and curriculum lead at Stanley Road Primary in Oldham - Andrew has co-written and delivered a well-regarded training offer with Clare Sealy, ‘Developing a Curriculum for Long-Term Learning’.

Places at these sessions are limited. Please book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment (maximum 2 delegates per school).
Leaders can choose to sign up for all five sessions in advance, or alternatively, sessions can be booked individually. Individual sessions will be available to book in due course – please email training@hertsforlearning.co.uk if you are interested in booking individual sessions.
Leaders who book all five sessions in advance will receive a 15% discount on the full price. The discounted price for all five sessions is £395. Individual sessions will cost £93.

Developing a curriculum for long-term learning
Over the past two years at Stanley Road Primary School we have worked to develop a coherent ‘knowledge-rich’ curriculum using insights from cognitive science to inform our decision making. In the session, I will outline the process we went through to develop the curriculum and will share examples of curricular planning to exemplify our thinking. Finally, I will explain some of the systems in school that support our curriculum implementation.

Where to begin: Developing your curriculum

Developing the curriculum has been the most exciting and rewarding part of my headship. Starting with post-it notes and squared paper, working closely with the subject leaders and interested parents, we have deconstructed and then reconstructed the curriculum. It has been hard work. It has been fun. It is a journey worth taking.

Entries are invited for the Year 5 mathematics challenge 2019. Each school is encouraged to submit a team of four Year 5 pupils for this friendly inter-school competition. The challenge will comprise a mixture of challenge, problem-solving and fun. There are 12 event heats. We look forward to seeing you at one of these. Winners from the individual heats and eight best runners up will go forward to the final, to be held in Stevenage on Friday 20th March.

Schools are limited to one team each initially. Additional teams will be transferred to the waiting list and schools will be contacted nearer the date of their chosen heat if there is capacity to enter these additional teams.

This training is aimed at English subject leaders who are either new to the role or looking to enhance their contribution to improving English across the school.

Throughout the course, delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations of core subject leadership.

Delegates will develop their capacity to evaluate teaching and learning across a range of evidence to drive improvement throughout the school.

The key elements of English subject leadership will be explored through a spotlight on each of the different aims of the English curriculum: effective spoken language, fluent reading for meaning, writing for a range of purposes and vocabulary development.

This will enable subject leaders to deepen subject-specific knowledge and understanding. Delegates are expected to attend all five sessions of this training.

Providing development and support for NQTs during their induction period. A wide-ranging programme tackling key aspects of the induction period and promoting good progress against the Teachers' Standards.

Sessions enable NQTs to receive high-quality training, share experiences and explore strategies for managing the pressures of their first year.

Day 1: Managing (whole-day)
Overview of the induction year, behaviour for learning, feedback for progress, liaising effectively with parents and working effectively with teaching assistants.
Day 2: Developing (whole-day)
Responding to pupils' diverse needs, the interactive classroom, drama techniques across the curriculum and a toolkit for effective time management. Day 3: Refining (half-day)
