Code: 19DMS/065P The secrets of SIMS: a year in the life of a school administrator

Delegates will see how to streamline the ways SIMS is used throughout the school year.

They will receive key dates and pointers for each month of the year, helping them schedule necessary work across the 12-month period. They will see how to access shortcuts and other useful tips that could make school administrative life easier and their role more efficient.

This course will also look at SIMS processes that may not be part of their daily routine, or may be new features that users are not aware of. The aim of the course is to highlight areas of SIMS that may have been previously unknown and could help to save time in a busy working office.

Code: 19SCI/013P Developing young scientists in Key Stage 2

Primary science should inspire pupils and foster their natural curiosity. Harnessing this curiosity involves providing opportunities for pupils to ask questions, explore materials and the environment, observe, test things out and find answers to questions. Exploring what it means to be a scientist, will not only engage and excite pupils but also develop essential working scientifically skills. This course is for teachers and subject leaders who are looking to inspire future scientists and develop life-long learning skills.

Code: IND326 Induction for Governors (EVENT FULL)

This full day course is for new governors for schools, academies and MAT's. This course is very important for all new governors so that they can be as effective as possible in helping the governing board in its role to secure school improvement. Delegates benefit from the opportunity to network with new governors from other schools and academies.

We recommend that all new governors attend the ‘Induction for governors’ course within the first 3 months of being appointed. In particular new governors derive maximum benefit if they book onto a course which takes place after they have attended at least one governing board meeting.

The three key roles of the governing board that will be covered during the course are:
1. vision and strategic
2. holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school
3. Financial management and best value

Delegates will also receive an insight into how to get to know your school and taking part in effective meetings. The course will use a variety of teaching strategies including group discussion, case studies and tutor input.

Code: 19ENG/055P Mastering spelling at Year 2: accuracy, rules and patterns

Teaching or supporting pupils with Year 2 age-related phonics and spelling?

National Curriculum 2014 introduces Year 2 pupils to some important changes in the way they think about phonics for spelling. Led by experts, the day unpicks key subject knowledge through using practical ideas and hands-on activities. Delegates will leave feeling confident to deliver effective teaching and support for Year 2 phonics and spelling.

The course will prepare delegates for the spelling element of both the GAPs test and writing teacher assessment. The activities are also powerful for those supporting struggling older spellers who need to become more accurate in their spelling. Those who have attended Phase 5-6 training before the 2014 curriculum was implemented will also benefit from this course, as some aspects are new into Year 2 and some are no longer necessary.
