Code: 19MAT/050P Creating challenge within the Key Stage 1 age-related mathematics curriculum

Is pitching work at the correct level for the most able or setting work which consistently challenges and stretches the most able or improving teaching of the most-able so they achieve higher standards an area of development? Understanding exactly what this means and looks like in the classroom is hard. Pupils who are quick at calculating and getting the right answer might seem secure and ready for the challenge. But do they have depth of understanding? Can they explain their thinking or apply it independently to a different context?

This course will explore how to move pupils through the programme of study ‘at broadly the same pace’ whilst providing opportunities to challenge all pupils. Using our challenge toolkit, we will look at ways to add depth and challenge to tasks suitable for all by adding reasoning, varying representations, asking ‘what if?’ and developing independence.

Code: DMS/20/117/P The secrets of SIMS: a year in the life of a school administrator

By attending this course, delegates will see how to streamline the ways SIMS is used throughout the school year. They will receive key dates and pointers for each month of the year, helping them schedule necessary work across the 12-month period. They will see how to access shortcuts and other useful tips that could make school administrative life easier and their role more efficient. This course will also look at SIMS processes that may not be part of their daily routine, or may be new features that users are not aware of.

The aim of the course is to highlight areas of SIMS that may have been previously unknown and could help to save time in a busy working office.

Code: SCI/20/31/P Assessment for Learning in primary science

This course will explore how to embed Assessment for Learning (AfL) within science lessons to provide teachers with opportunities to judge pupil’s ongoing progress in knowledge and skills. During the day there will be opportunities to develop learning intentions, success criteria and higher-order questioning with a particular focus on working scientifically. In order to do this, it would be helpful for delegates to bring the next topic they will be covering. There will be a chance to look at pupils' work and discuss how to make judgements about progress and provide feedback. Delegates are asked to bring a sample of topic work from two pupils to help with this teacher assessment.

Code: ASS/19/508/P Assessment moderation cluster for teachers of Year 2: Cluster 4 – Stevenage

This year, the focus of this moderation session will be reading and writing. The session will provide an excellent opportunity for Year 2 teachers to work together to explore the accuracy of their assessment judgements and achieve greater consistency in standards. Teachers will be supported in considering how secure their pupils are in their learning so far, and how well on track they are for the end of Key Stage 1 standards.

It is essential that delegates bring along examples of pupils' work from their class. We will provide a suggested reading assessment task for teachers to use with the pupils in advance of the sessions. In January, information will be sent to delegates and also uploaded to the grid at: http://www.thegrid.org.uk/learning/assessment/ks1/moderationclusters.shtml
