By attending this Microsoft Excel course, delegates will learn some of its hidden features to transform their skills, and will gain the further knowledge needed to create and use spreadsheets more efficiently, through the use of advanced functions, chart creation, and data analysis.

The course is designed for those who have attended the introductory course, or who have a good knowledge and experience of using Excel. Using relevant, practical examples that would typically be encountered in a school setting, including pupil and financial data, delegates will leave feeling confident about creating advanced spreadsheets for calculating and analysing data.

Code: ENG/19/271/P Key Stage 2 Reading Fluency Project: Implications for Classroom Practice - Walsall (LIMITED SPACES)

This one-day CPD event will offer an insight into the transformational teaching strategies used in the Herts for Learning Key Stage 2 Reading Fluency Project.

The project draws on proven reading strategies to improve pupils’ trajectory towards the Expected Standard (EXS) in reading in Year 6, including:

  • modelling of fluent reading
  • echo reading
  • repeated re-reading
  • skilled questioning leading to deep discussion
  • selection of well-chosen text
  • modelling of comprehension skill 

Headline project data:
  • pupils made an average of 27 months progress in their reading comprehension age (PPG pupils made 31.5 months progress)
  • 82% of eligible pupils made 6 months+ progress in their reading comprehension age

Furthermore, following the 8-week project period, pupils typically demonstrated the following changes in reading behaviour:
  • increased stamina
  • pupils are able to read more text for a longer period whilst retaining understanding
  • increased accuracy
  • pupils make less substitutions, omissions, mispronunciations, additions when reading a ‘cold’ text
  • increased enjoyment
  • pupils read more and are more willing to explore a wider range of literature
  • increased confidence
  • pupils tackle challenging texts with greater willingness and show improved tenacity in teasing out meaning
  • increased engagement
  • pupils offer more extended contributions in group discussions about challenging texts

This is our annual primary language event of the year. Delegates can listen to key speakers, be updated on the latest issues surrounding languages teaching in primary schools and, as always, have some time to network and share ideas.

This year Professor Florence Myers, Research Director and Chair of RiPL, will be delivering a session on Metalinguistic awareness and links to L1 Literacy, sharing key research findingswith delegates.

In addition, Sarah Schechter, Director, Routes into Languages East and Bye Fellow, Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, wil be speaking about the success of the national spelling bee competition for secondary schools and the launch of a competition for the primary phase. 

Sue Cave will be presenting her session ‘Grammar Moves’. Sue will demonstrate tried and tested activities for developing grammatical understanding relating to the KS2 targets of the MFL Programme of Study. The emphasis will be on progression from word to sentence level both orally and written. Activities include either movement or a kinaesthetic element, designed to engage learners actively and creatively.

This termly user group is designed to provide up-to-date information on developments within the Capita SIMS software and statutory returns, as well as exchanging information on processes and procedures undertaken on a day-to-day basis.

It also offers the opportunity to ask Data Management consultants any questions, and network with other school administrators. This session is free to schools that have a support contract with Data Management Services. HfL recommends attendance at these user groups to keep up to date and informed.
